From Klaas and Lindsay pulling out their first win in AA men’s, to Sammy breaking through in the women’s… throw in a first A win for Leah and Lucy, and it makes for another great tournament.
Klaas and Lindsay win AA Men
They’ve been edging closer across the season; from winning a game in the division, to quarters, semi’s and now, Klaas and Lindsay have a AA win. Starting with a win over old school battlers Meyer/Grimmett in their first match, Klaas and Lindsay rolled through their pool without losing a set. The ease of those results ensured the pair would take one of two births straight into the semi’s. Their opponents would be regular AA finalists Czuba/Radwan… but they were no match for the young lads, dispatching the older pair 18-8,18-7 to reach the final. A final against fellow giant youngsters Ben and Mitch was cut off, as Mitch had to catch a plane to Canberra. A fantastic result all round boys.
Sammy wins AA Women
Sammy, playing with her partner, won her first AA event in what was a fantastic way to prepare for the Australian Youth Champs in Coolangatta a week later. Straight sets wins over fellow VBVA crew Hannah, Hillary and Ella, saw the girls straight into the semi’s. Their opponents Lulu and Cat, had managed to get through a tough three-set quarter-final against VBVA player Steph and her partner 15-6 in the third. Sammy and her partner were too strong for Lulu and Cat in their semi, winning 20-18, 18-12. A final against AAA Warriors Sara and Anina was their next step. A tight back and forth saw a final, crucial third set go the way of Sammy and her partner 16-14. A first AA win for Sammy; well done girls.
Leah and Lucy win A Women
With 12 VBVA juniors playing in the division, this was a tournament without the need to study opponents. For Leah and Lucy it was a massive step forward, and a great precursor to the junior national event. Awesome result Leah and Lucy!
And…
Evie, playing with former three-time Olympian Tamsin Hinchley, made the semi-finals of a strong AAA tournament.
Gemma and Emma, having won AA last tournament, managed to pull out a win in their first AAA event. A fantastic result, especially given they managed to take 10 and 15 points of eventual winners Slawuta/Zivcic.
As mentioned above, Lulu and Cat making AA semi’s, and Steph and partner Amy so close to semi’s themselves.
Congrats to all.
