The first official VBVA Sydney training camp has been confirmed, with eight members of the Tier 1 crew flying north over the Easter long weekend; from Friday 25th – Monday 28th March.
Originally planned to coincide with round #7 of the Northern Beaches Volleyball Association (NBVA) tour; the announcement earlier this week of ‘Volleyfest’ – the largest beach volleyball event in Australia since the 2000 Olympics – means the VBVA crew will now get to see some of the best players in the world compete.
The AVC Asian Champs will take place across the Easter weekend as the final centre-piece event of ‘Volleyfest’. This event, coupled with a grueling range of different training sessions will ensure Alba, Jemima, Jez, Zeb, Blake, Eliza, Linus and Shelby are immersed in the sport for the entire weekend.
“It’ll be a great opportunity for the kids to see just how much work goes into being an elite athlete,” according to head coach Brett ‘Bam’ Middlin, who grew up on the northern beaches of Sydney. “The northern beaches – and in particular Manly beach – is the spiritual home of the sport in Australia.
“So many of the best players in Australia and the US, both past and present, have regularly run the picturesque Palm beach sand dunes, trained in the Collaroy and Freshwater rock pools… They’ve played on the soft, deep sands at Newport, and they’ve trained from dawn to dusk on Manly beach. With thanks to Beachcomber Cafe, the crew we’re taking up will get to enjoy all of that.
“To top it off they’ll get to train and play with and against the best young players in NSW, as well as watching the best players in Asia trying to confirm their places for Brazil (Olympics) in front of a packed stadium on Manly beach.”
Plans have been made for combined game and training sessions with fellow junior players from the NSW Centre of Excellence, based in Manly. VBVA will work with the NSW COE in arranging future camps commencing late 2016.
Easter can’t come soon enough!
