It was a winning weekend for a bunch of our crew in Round 6 of the VicBeach State Tour; from James pulling out his first AA final win, to Talia helping Ella win the Women’s AA… and Gui grabbing his first tournament win in A.
Following close on the heels of Max and Quin, who won the Men’s AA division in Round 5, came James rolling through in Round 6. Playing for the first time with former VIC Junior Quinn Tennent, the pair made it through the tournament losing only one set; their first of the day, while they were still working out how to play together. Their run of wins came at the expense of some of the wisest players in the division… this was not an easy draw, yet James and Quinn made it seem as much. Next round AAA.
In the Women’s AA, a plethora of VBVA girls were on show, along with several of our Warriors… but it was Talia and Ella who took the title, scraping past fellow crew members Lulu and Gemma, 16-14 in the grand final third set.
For Lulu and Gemma, in order to make that final, they had to defeat Hilary and Audrey in the semi’s; Talia and Ella beat Warriors Mimi and Isi in the quarters… but to get there, both teams had to defeat pool winners, as both lost first round games; Talia and Ella to former VBVA alumni Georgia and Bonnie, and Lulu and Gemma to eventual semi-finalists Jacqui and Bernita. A fantastic effort by all four girls.
Gui has been a man on a mission! The lovable Brazilian with a scissor kick to relish, finally broke through with his first A win, and a streak of confidence for future AA tournaments. Playing with equally lovable Warrior Danny, the boys pipped a regular AA pair, playing down, 15-8 in the third.
To top off an extraordinarily good tournament for the crew, Lucy and Leah made the final of Women’s A, losing in a close final.
