35 teams were contesting the Men’s division of the SA Open… and Zeb was the youngest in the draw. Only recently 15, and with partner Nick only 16, nobody expected the VBVA grommets to pull out anything special. Those nobody’s were forced to amend their expectations…
“I’m just grateful we had the opportunity to match it against the best in the sport currently, and to do it with good mate Zeb is even better.”
Nick and Zeb made the top two teams – Tang/Schumann (VIC) and Moore/Moore (SA) – work for their wins, and beat fellow Victorian’s Mauro/Rutherford comfortably in the final game to pick up third in their pool.
“I’m just grateful we had the opportunity to match it against the best in the sport currently, and to do it with good mate Zeb is even better,” said Nick, “Winning a game at our first major tournament just adds to the experience… especially given we beat a pair of fellow Victorians.”
They may not have made it through to the round of 16, but a 17th place finish and a win in their first national tour event is a fantastic result for the lads.
