Some may say the first event of the season is just a ‘warm-up event’… but when a 15 year old wins the highest division; beating the best open-age women in the state in the process, it’s a pretty big thing.
Lauren, alongside tour veteran and former winner of countless events over the years, Marta Slawuta, may not have been seen as much of a threat, as seventh seeds in a division of eight. The words ‘much of’ would most likely have been removed immediately following a drubbing at the hands of 3rd seeds Jana Reichmuth and Sandy Hope (18-9, 18-9).
But then, much like the wind, things started to swing around…
It started with a straight sets win over 2nd seeds Alexandra Friedrich and her partner Marcela (18-9, 18-16), followed closely by a win over Monika Ranita and Diana Oldehus (18-14, 18-13), which saw them finish second in their pool and into the semi-finals. A tight three sets got them past tournament top seeds Samantha Date and Victoria Schaw (8-18, 18-12, 15-10), and into a final against Jana and Sandy; the 3rd seeds who so easily beat them in the pool round. It looked like Jana and Sandy again had the measure of Marta and Lauren, dispatching them with the same level of ease (6-18) they had earlier in the day. However, the resilience that kicked in following their first match, kicked in again soon after that first set… pushing through to win the second 18-13. The final set was back and forth until finally Marta and Lauren pulled through to win it 18-16, taking out the first AAA Women’s event of the season. Records may need to be checked, but that result surely secures Lauren as the youngest ever women’s AAA winner in Victoria.
Another VBVA pair who had a fantastic day out were Lucia and Laura, who made it through to the Women’s AA final, winning all four of their pool matches. Two of those pool matches were against their eventual opponents in the final. Unfortunately they were unable to make it three from three, losing the final in three tight sets. A fantastic result for the girls nonetheless.
Nick and Blake started the season in AAA, and more than held their own; finishing third in their group. They may have already played on the national tour, but this was Nick’s first foray into the top state division and Blake’s second.
A special mention to regular Warriors Rudi and Octavi, who almost completed a successful first event of the season, making it to, but losing a close Men’s AA final.
Well done to every crew member who competed.
