Lauren and Alba made the most of their Saturday exit from the SA Open main draw, taking out the junior division title on the Sunday. Fellow VBVA crew members Lucia and Laura finished 3rd; losing to Lauren and Alba in the semi-finals.
A quirk in the format of the event meant one team from each of three pools would make it through to the semi-final stage, along with a best-placed second team from one of the pools. This meant Lauren and Alba (1st in their pool, and best-placed on count-back across all pools) would take on the best-placed second… which happened to be from their own pool. That team was Lucia and Laura! A close pool match – Lauren and Alba prevailing – was replicated in the semi’s with the same outcome.
That win meant Lauren and Alba were to match up against Nicola Gregory (VIC) and Natalie Whittington (WA) – both of whom represented Australia alongside Lauren at the 2016 Asian Champs in Thailand – in the final.
Intense rallies and continual momentum swings finally produced an outcome; Lauren and Alba winning in three tight sets.
Top of the podium and a 17th at open level for Lauren and Alba, and a 3rd place junior finish and 9th at open level made for a fantastic weekend for our girls!
